Unterwössen – On 14 November 2024, the expansion of the mobile communications infrastructure in southern Bavaria reached another milestone: In Unterwössen, on the northern edge of the Alps, a 40-metre-high lattice mast was successfully completed, which was designed and produced by the WIEGEL subsidiary Telekommunikationsbau Services GmbH (TKS).
Due to the rough terrain, which is not suitable for the use of a crane, a helicopter was used for this challenging project. The mast was assembled in seven parts, known as ‘sections’, each weighing up to 3.6 tonnes. Under the direction of Markus Herler, site manager for the new tower construction at TKS, an experienced six-person assembly team ensured that everything went smoothly.
TKS, a subsidiary of the WIEGEL Group based in Dretzel, Saxony-Anhalt, specialises in the construction of lattice masts and acts as a general contractor for mobile phone sites. In addition to production and assembly, TKS is also responsible for the complete planning and development as well as the management of authorities for telecommunications structures.
‘The project was a logistical challenge, but thanks to the excellent cooperation of everyone involved, the mast was erected on time and without a hitch,’ says Markus Hansen, Commercial Director at TKS.
The 250-tonne foundation of the mast, which was poured in mid-October, provides the necessary stability in the alpine environment. Deutsche Funkturm GmbH (DFMG), which is responsible for infrastructure development as part of Deutsche Telekom, is the client for the project and is thus ensuring that Telekom customers in the region can benefit from optimised network quality.
