– Under the slogan “For a strong European recycling economy”, the European Commission has distinguished EMAS organizations for particularly resource-efficient management.
A jury composed of experts from the Federal Ministry of the Environment, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), the German Accreditation and Registration Association for Environmentalists (DAU) and the Environment Advisory Committee (UGA), has selected the WIEGEL Group as the German winner in the category “large companies”. The WIEGEL Group has thus automatically qualified for the participation in the European EMAS Award, which will be presented on 8 May 2017 in Valletta, Malta.
Excerpt from the press release of the Environmental Expert Committee (UGA):
“Wiegel Feuerverzinken Wiegel – Verwaltung GmbH & Co KG is a pioneer and role model in environmental protection in hot-dip galvanising, which is ensured by the use of the best available technology. The company dispenses with the use of leaded zinc and returns waste materials such as acid vapours to the production cycle, while consistent process optimisation has greatly reduced the use of materials and the volume of waste. Instead of using fresh acid, the company utilises regenerated acid from waste incineration plants. Zinc consumption has been almost halved in the last 25 years. All Wiegel plants operate without waste water. The proportion of hazardous waste for disposal has been reduced from 70% to 3% since the introduction of EMAS, and the company has managed to quadruple its workforce in the last 25 years thanks to environmentally friendly innovations, not least due to the introduction and use of environmental management in accordance with EMAS.”
