Politics meets business: Industrial impulses for the Upper Lusatia region at WIEGEL Kittlitz

Kittlitz – A distinguished visitor arrived at WIEGEL Kittlitz on March 12, 2026: Saxon Minister of Education and Member of the Saxon State Parliament for the Görlitz constituency, Conrad Clemens, visited the hot-dip galvanizing plant.

During discussions with WIEGEL Regional Managing Director North, Sven Biebler, as well as WIEGEL plant managers from Upper Lusatia – Manuela Junger, Jaqueline Schlesinger, and Volkmar Wellschmidt – key economic topics were addressed:

• Personnel and skilled workers: How do we attract the brightest minds of tomorrow?
• Economic situation: Insights into our current order situation, industry challenges, and the importance of our Upper Lusatia sites for regional businesses, especially in the context of energy infrastructure and grid expansion.
• Framework conditions: The need for predictable and stable conditions for industry, particularly regarding reliable energy supply and energy prices.
• Growth: What expansion plans are we pursuing and what funding opportunities are available for our locations?
• Sustainability: Discussion on the importance of steel as a material combined with optimal corrosion protection through hot-dip galvanizing for sustainable growth, energy use in lifecycle assessments, recyclability, and even upcycling of steel with zinc.

Following the exchange, the visit continued with a tour of the production facilities. Minister Clemens and his team gained firsthand insight into our processes.

He was particularly impressed by the galvanizing process, its complexity, the control of production processes, and of course the kettle filled with 200 tons of zinc at 450°C – essential for achieving perfect galvanizing results for industry, construction, and trade.
